SONGLINES MOVEMENT

     LIFE IN OZ - 1999

The kind of country i want to live in would see a Prime
Minister who delights in sitting down at the
ceremonial/protest fire of First Peoples outside of
Parliament House and having a good yarn until he
developed an appreciation of their point of view - then
went away resolved to do something about it.

As it is in the back-to-front land of Oz, where
Wrongheaded Yesterday's men mismanage life's affairs,
First Peoples are evicted by police and under the cover
of darkness on the basis of something called the Trespass
     on Commonwealth Lands Act.

     FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES

Hey, there ain't no Commonwealth land for First Peoples
to trespass upon which was not illegally occupied and
trespassed upon by the Anglo-Australian Crown in the
     first instance.

That is what they want to talk about, Mr Prime Minister.
That is why their camp fire burns at the entrance to
Parliament House. You cannot extinguish that fire.

     THE FANTASY LAND OF OZ

I call this the land of Oz, where our Wrongheaded
Brothers and Sisters profit from the pretence that
     back-to-front is actually normal.

And, deep down in its soul, the country yearns for things
to be put right with the people whose lives represent its
     very spirit.

How can we help with the healing required to take us into
the 21st Century, and beyond that into the eternal lands
     of Australian Dreaming?

     Bruce Reyburn
