Beating of native OK by cop
watchdogs

 By CP
LONDON, Ont. --Police officers who beat and
kicked an aboriginal protester almost to death during
an infamous skirmish at a provincial park four years
ago will face no charges.

"There's no question" Cecil George was injured
during his arrest, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit
said yesterday. But there's also no "reliable and
credible evidence" that they used excessive force, the
agency said.

Unit director Peter Tinsley also said there was no
way to establish which officers were involved in the
1995 altercation at Ipperwash Provincial Park
because it took place in the dark and the officers
wore "hard tac (tactical) gear" that obscured their
faces.

During the same standoff, police shot and killed
protester Dudley George.

"Given one of our First Nations band members was
killed, and another beaten so savagely it was thought
he had died, this report is outrageous," regional Chief
Tom Bressette said in a news release.
