ABC Newslink Aboriginal leader spears flag at palace Tuesday 9 March, 1999 (7:35am AEDT) The leader of an Aboriginal clan has symbolically handed the Australian flag back to Buckingham Palace, to kill the evil he says it has done to his people. Michael Anderson, co-founder of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, carried the Australia flag on the end of a spear and dropped it through the palace gates. He said the Australian flag meant death to his people, adding that successive British monarchs had signed papers legalising the killing of Aborigines and approving the forced adoptions program of the Stolen Generations. Mr Anderson said by returning the flag he was releasing indigenous Australians from the evil of colonialism. "To kill this evil that came, to bring it back where it belongs," he said. "So that we can at least have a chance back home again now and try to heal our wounds." After dropping the flag through the palace gates, he said the British had imposed tyranny on his people. ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
