It must be quite a shock to the Govt to have its hand-picked youth
'roundtable' not only disprove the govt stereo-typing of them but then
to recommend something the govt doesn't want to hear.
Didn't anyone tell them that youth is a time of rebellion? ;-)

Kemp doesn't expect policies
 to come from roundtable
 Tuesday 9 March, 1999 (1:30pm AEDT)

Federal Youth Affairs Minister David Kemp says it is
unlikely the national youth roundtable will come up with
a single policy to present to the Government.

The comments come on the day the Roundtable has
released its first recommendation on Government policy.

Dr Kemp was addressing members of the roundtable on
the second day of a three-day meeting in Canberra.

He said he believes the 50 young people chosen for the
forum are representative of Australia's youth and bring a
wide variety of opinions to the group.

Dr Kemp said he is not looking for an artificial
 consensus from the roundtable.

"I suppose it would be pretty rare for one viewpoint to be
truly representative of all young people in Australia,
 throughout Australia," he said.

"As here on the roundtable, we recognise that there is a
diversity of opinions and positions and the Government
 wants to hear them."

 Reconciliation

The National Youth Roundtable has reported back to the
Federal Government on its discussion of reconciliation.

Reconciliation is the first discussion point on which
Roundtable members have formed a single position and
they have come up with seven essential steps to achieve
 it.

They want the Government to acknowledge past
injustices to indigenous people, along with their current
impact, with most members also favouring a written
 apology.

The Roundtable wants all Australians to be educated
about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and
for a balanced view of Australia's history to be presented.

It says steps should also to be taken to improve
Aboriginal health, education and justice, that indigenous
custodianship of the land should be recognised and
 indigenous culture celebrated.
