Hi All Just had breakfast with Phil Ruddock and the Australians for Reconciliation Group from Albury. He was here to present Sister Maureen Hummerston with a certificate of recognition for her outstanding work in promoting reconciliation and more so for her help in assisting local Aboriginal community advancement. Congratulations Maureen. As an invited guest of the Reconciliation Group, I was there to button hole Phil and stress that reconciliation cannot be seen in isolation from equity issues related to Aboriginal people. I requested that he look at funding arrangements for Aboriginal student support across the board and gave him examples of how student support funds are channelled away from that purpose to initiatives that should be funded by main stream education funds. He was somewhat doubtful when I told him that universities are not accountable for the disposal of student support funds beyond their Aboriginal Education Strategy which forms the basis for the allocation of DETYA funds. However, he said that he would discuss the matter with Mr Kemp. Hmmm, I've heard that before. I don't think that the Minister fully grasped what I was saying about the impossibility of achieving reconciliation while inequities persist and his government are set on pulling the wings off programs designed to give Aboriginal people their rightful place in Australian society.
