RE: DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION - AGENDA ITEM 3 - 44-56 EVELEIGH ST REDFERN
The Block Community advises the Councillors that decisions made in
consideration of development of the Block, or any part thereof, must be
informed by notions of Aboriginal sovereignty. Any action that effectively
disperses the residents, or deprives them of their occupation of the
properties on the Block will be seen by those residents, supported in
international law, as an act of aggression.
The Block as a geographic location is a symbol of the Black heart of
Australia. If your decision effectively stops that heartbeat, by the
destruction of the tangible connection to the Block, that Black Australia
repeatedly exhibits, in a multitude of ways, then your actions will be
taken as aiding and abetting genocide, and councillors will be held
personally accountable.
There is a petition circulating to the State and Federal governments
concerning the future of the Block in terms of resident autonomy and
unthreatened occupation of their homes, regardless of the appalling
condition of some properties. The petition is not addressed to local
government as the community were informed by Mr Mundine of the Aboriginal
Housing Company, that no development application existed, however, the
Mayor, Mr Smith, informed the community publicly on the 16th February, 1999
(yesterday) that such an application, is in fact, on the agenda for
tonight's meeting.
The council is once again advised that the Block community, both resident
and transient, do not support the Aboriginal Housing Company's application.
