Herron defends cannibal
 statements
 Monday 29 March, 1999 (3:58pm AEST)

Federal Minister for Aboriginal Affairs John Herron says
there is nothing wrong with claiming Aborigines were
 once cannibals.

Western Australian Liberal backbencher Barry Haase
made the aside at a recent Parliamentary inquiry held on
 Bathurst Island.

He defended his actions, saying it was nothing more than
 a joke.

Senator Herron told Federal Parliament he had spoken to
 his colleague about the incident.

"Madam president have we reached a state of affairs in
this country when somebody...cracks a joke around the
place, that it then becomes a matter of something it
 wasn't," he said.

"They're all unanimous on the other side [that] nobody
can crack a joke - now is it no longer possible for anyone
to crack a joke and say something of that nature."
