ABC Newslink Herron defends cannibal statements Monday 29 March, 1999 (3:58pm AEST) Federal Minister for Aboriginal Affairs John Herron says there is nothing wrong with claiming Aborigines were once cannibals. Western Australian Liberal backbencher Barry Haase made the aside at a recent Parliamentary inquiry held on Bathurst Island. He defended his actions, saying it was nothing more than a joke. Senator Herron told Federal Parliament he had spoken to his colleague about the incident. "Madam president have we reached a state of affairs in this country when somebody...cracks a joke around the place, that it then becomes a matter of something it wasn't," he said. "They're all unanimous on the other side [that] nobody can crack a joke - now is it no longer possible for anyone to crack a joke and say something of that nature." ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
