Abbott proud of preamble despite poll rejection

Employment Services Minister Tony Abbott today strongly defended Prime
Minister John Howard's proposed
preamble, despite less than a quarter of the population supporting the
document.
An Age Poll found just 23 per cent of those questioned supported the
preamble, 27 per cent opposed it while 50 per
cent did not yet have an opinion on the document.
But Mr Abbott, a leading monarchist and close ally of the prime
minister, said the preamble was splendid.
"I think John Howard and (poet) Les Murray have come up with an
excellent draft preamble," he told reporters.
"I'm proud of it. I'd be proud to recite it to my kids; I've already
recited it to the parliament.
"I'm sure it will be overwhelmingly carried come November."
But former Labor deputy leader Gareth Evans, who drafted Labor's
proposal for the preamble, said the poll came as
no surprise.
"Mr Howard's been relying on the people's verdict, he's now got it," he
told reporters.
"The verdict is that this is a stinker."
