DEAR FRIENDS, PLEASE FORWARD:

1999 World Indigenous Peoples' Conference, Hilo, Hawai'i, USA

Aloha Indigenous Friends and Allies,

The 1999 World Indigenous Peoples' Conference on Education will be held
in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawai'i, USA, August 1-7, 1999. The
following is the brief statement explaining the conference.

"The 1999 WIPCE (World Indigenous Peoples' Conference on Education)

HAWAI'I Theme
'Aia Na Ha`ina i Loko o Kakou - The Answers Lies Within Us'
*************************************************************************
is intended to help us focus on the Past, Present and Future of our
cultural knowledge practices, to identify current needs and strengthen
future collaborations. We intend to shape the conference accordingly.

Philosophy of event: For Na Po`e Hawai'i or Native Hawaiians, learning
is made valuable through experience. We are looking for indigenous
practitioners to address all levels of our physical and spiritual
selves.

This is a gathering of empowerment beyond ordinary networking. We are
asking indigenous educators, artisans, political activists, healers, and
community members to offer opportunities for deep engagement and
meaningful practice.

    We want to focus on past, present and future projects;
ideas that strengthen our beliefs and practices and offer direction and
guidance as we enter the new millennium. We are asking for presentations
that
are culturally based and connected to the people and land they are intended
to serve. We encourage speakers to deliver their presentation in their
native tongue -- please be ready to interpret.

Some categories of presentation:

Indigenous Spirituality, Indigenous Literature, Indigenous Philosophy
Educational Programs, Indigenous Theater, Indigenous Teacher Education
Cultural Immersion Programs, Indigenous Learning Centers,
Rights Movements/Indigenous Movements
Media and Education, Indigenous Colleges/Universities,
Traditional Practices (Life-Cycle, Sports, etc)
