ABC Newslink Indigenous veterans want names on memorials Sunday 25 April, 1999 (12:10pm AEST) A national network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander war veterans has called for the names of deceased indigenous soldiers to be added to war memorials around the country. The network's Robert Isaacs says indigenous men and women were told to go back to their reserves after serving in various wars and the names of dead soldiers often do not appear on war memorials. He says descendents of the deceased veterans want to know their relatives are being recognised for their war efforts. "We are finding out that a lot of our names are not recorded, the history of names of Aboriginal people are not recorded on the memorials, even in local towns where local governments have these memorials set up where they have their Anzac Day parades and that sort of thing, a lot of the Aboriginal names are not recorded on those memorials," Mr Isaacs said. The network has also called for a national indigenous war memorial to be built along Anzac Parade in Canberra. ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
