ATSIC BOARD LIFTS MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE

The Board of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission has
decided to lift a vote of no confidence in the Federal Minister for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs.

The ATSIC Chairman, Mr Gatjil Djerrkura, said the decision to lift the
motion of no confidence, which was imposed in March last year, was taken at
today's meeting of the Board in Canberra in the interests of the
Commission's constituents.

"It is our view that the motion has served its purpose," Mr Djerrkura said.

"We have made our point and it is now time to move on."

Mr Djerrkura said the Board was mindful that the decision should not be read
as a motion of confidence in the Minister.

"Quite the reverse," he added.

"We are seeking to re-establish a relationship.

"The Minister must now play his part.

"We have a number of substantive issues we need to discuss with the Minister
as a full Board to advance the interests of our constituents.

"He has refused to date to meet with the full Board until the motion was
lifted.

"Today's decision has been taken to facilitate this process.

"It is now up to him to meet the Board of ATSIC half way.

"The Board imposed the motion because the relationship with the Minister was
unequal. He was dictating his agenda to us rather than working with the
Board.

"We are now seeking a new era in our relationship with the Government."
