Hearing recommends national
 indigenous service
 Thursday 20 May, 1999 (2:52pm AEST)

A Productivity Commission hearing into Australian
Broadcasting has heard there is a need to create an
 indigenous broadcasting service.

The National Indigenous Media Association has told
today's hearing in Brisbane that a lack of cultural
diversity is keeping indigenous issues out of the
 mainstream media.

Chairman, Jim Remedio, says Aboriginal affairs have
 been sidelined for too long.

"We want the opportunity to compete with mainstream
media, much the same way that SBS and ABC [does],"
 Mr Remedio said.

"This will give indigenous Australia the best chance of
breaking the welfare cycle and allow indigenous media to
 grow its own economy."
