The International Secretariat of OMCT has received new information on
the following situation in Sudan.
Brief reminder of the situation
The International Secretariat of OMCT was informed of the arrest of
three journalists, among them, Mr. Mohamed Abd Alseed. While OMCT
was informed that two of them were free, it was reported that Mr.
Mohamed Abd Alseed was still being held in detention (see Appeal
Case SDN 200499.1).
Moreover, according to the Sudanese Victims of Torture Group (SVTG),
member of the OMCT network, despite the announcements of his release
some two weeks ago, Mr. Mohamed Abd Alseed remained in detention at
an unknown location.
New Information
The International Secretariat of OMCT has been informed of the grave
concern for the physical and psychological integrity of Mr. Mohamed
Abd Alseed.
According to SVTG, Mohamed Abdel Seed, has been subjected to
physical and psychological torture. Reports suggest that he was
deprived of sleep for the first few days. He allegedly endured
continuos
slapping to the face and his legs were beaten. He was apparently forced
to stand on a hot plate in the sun for 12 hours with bare feet. It is
alleged
that the resulting severe burns to the soles of his feet were not
inadequately treated, resulting in infection. He was also kept in small
tiny cell, without natural light.
According to the information received from SVTG, recently the security
brought doctors to treat him. However he was not taken to the hospital.
The security forces continue to refuse access to his lawyer and his
family.
It has been further reported that the Minister of Culture and
Information (
Amin Hassan Omer) invited a selected number of editors of several daily
newspapers and pro-government lawyers, to watch a video of Mohamed
Abdel Seed apparently giving a confession. It is believed that his
admission on the tape that he was an agent working for the Egyptian
Government was obtained under duress. It has been further alleged that
the video was edited to give an impression that Mr Abdel Seed
voluntarily admitted to the Sudanese Government�s claims of his
espionage activities for the Egyptian Government.
Action requested
Write to the Sudanese authorities urging them to :
i. immediately establish the whereabouts of Mr. Mohamed Abd
Alseed, and guarantee his physical and psychological integrity ;
ii. provide immediate, adequate and free medical care to Mr. Abd
Alseed and ensure adequate restitution, compensation, and
rehabilitation ;
iii.order his immediate release if he is held in detention without
valid charges or, in the event that he has been charged, ensure
his right to a fair and impartial trial, his procedural rights and
his
right to legal counsel at all times as well as his right to access
to
his family;
iv. guarantee all human rights and fundamental freedoms in
accordance with international standards established in the
international covenants ratified by Sudan, particularly the
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as
international human rights standards.
