Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Precedence: bulk Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Status: RO At this afternoon's meeting of the Council of the University, after a "very peaceful (but somewhat noisy) assembly" by students, extended debate and discussion, the Council unanimously indicated its support for an Indigenous Health Course - whilst acknowledging the need for review and restructuring of the course to ensure its professional credibility/standing. It was also indicated that there was a need for funding support from the state government for the course. The Council voted to have new students enrolled in the course in 2000, with the aim that this occur by Semester One in 2000. The Council is now waiting a report from the Academic Senate to follow from its July 14 1999 meeting - where issues of course review, structure, delivery modes, academic rigour will be covered. This report will be considered by the Council at its August meeting. The Chancellor of the University sought to steer a path through the various interest groups that would satisfy all parties - and in fact ultimately the final vote was carried unanimously. Congratulations to Student Representative on the Council, Ann Butler for her principled stand and to the many who provided letters of support for the course. I would now encourage those who gave such strong and vocal support to this campaign to now work equally hard to ensure that the state government provides funding - letters should be sent to Col Markham MLA - Wollongong and also to Peter Primrose - MLC, who was attending his first meeting following his recent appointment to the University Council after the March 1999 election (he replaced Rev F Nile as the Upper House of Parliamentary Rep on the Council and is relatively local - coming from the Campbelltown area) Kerrie Christian Member of the University Council ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
