People interested in this petition might also be interested in the
following fairly staggering fact:

In 1788 Victorian Aboriginies controlled some 2,2760,000 hectares of land.

In 1999, after some thirty years of the so called "Land Rights Era",
Victorian Kooris have control of some ONE HUNDREDTH OF ONE PERCENT of
Victoria. Thats 1/10,000 of the land which they held at the time of white
occupation. According to most estimates, the Koori poopulation of Victoria
is today about the same size as it was in 1788.

It is by a significant margin the smallest percentage of land controlled
by indigenous people in mainland Australia. Only NSW comes halfway close
with somewhere betwee .06% and .1% of land under indigenous control
(between 6 and ten times the Victorian percentage, but still trivial in the
extreme compared with the original area, and even with any other mainland
state).

This might point the way to a good campaign objective. 10% of the land
originally controlled would amount to a 1000 fold improvement on the
existing situation in Victoria!

(These figures were kindly brought to my attention by Wayne Atkinson, Yorta
Yorta elder and historian).
