ABC Newslink Fischer issues apology to indigenous population Sunday 18 July, 1999 (7:00pm AEST) The acting Prime Minister, Tim Fischer, has given a personal apology to Australia's indigenous people. Mr Fischer, who ends two weeks as acting Prime Minister tonight, has also said he regrets calling the Northern Land Council blood sucking leeches. The Prime Minister, John Howard, has also previously given a personal apology, but he has been criticised for not giving an apology on behalf of the Government. Mr Fischer has told Channel Ten, he believes reconciliation can be achieved and he has given a personal, but not an official apology for past events including massacres of Aboriginal people. "Personally I have and I will say right this moment, I am sorry, for all that has happened over the years," he said. ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
