The Australian A punt on justice Two street-wise Melbourne lawyers will next week open a new front in the compensation battle for Aborigines taken from their mothers. As DAVID NASON reports, many say Australian history is on trial 7aug99 LATE last year Michael Schaefer of the Melbourne law firm Holding Redlich was addressing a meeting of stolen generations Aborigines at the St Marys Football Club in Darwin when it dawned on him that most of the audience did not have a clue what he was talking about. Schaefer had been trying to explain the six causes of action filed in the Federal Court on behalf of Lorna Cubillo, 60, and Peter Gunner, 51, two members of the stolen generations who are seeking compensation from the Commonwealth in a civil law test case set to resume in Darwin on Tuesday. Realising a different approach was needed and aware of St Marys' proud record in producing AFL stars such as Maurice Rioli and Michael Long, Schaefer resorted to a football allegory. "I told them to imagine we were in the last quarter of a grand final and that we had six free kicks in the goal square," he told The Weekend Australian. "Then I said only one of those kicks had to go through the goals for us to win the game. They understood it all then. They cheered the bloody house down."
