This is a big step in the right direction----Well done Rod Welford and the
Beattie Government.

Interestingly, there has not been a word of this successful tranfer of
Ownership in the Courier Mail.

Maybe the powers that be do not want Queenslanders to see how easily
Indigenous Ownership of Land can be restored when a genuine approach is
taken---they might begin ignoring the clarion racist calls of the Coalition
whenever Native Title is mentioned.

Government hands Cape York lands to Injinoo owners

Source: AAP | Published: Thursday August 19 11:51:32 AM

The Queensland Government today handed 345,000 hectares of land on
the tip of Cape York Peninsula to the
Aboriginal Injinoo people, the traditional owners.

Environment Minister Rod Welford said the handover was 135 years to
the month after two British ships dropped
anchor in the area, heralding the start of European occupation.

Welford told state parliament that in the following 40 years the
Aboriginal population of the district had dropped
from 3,000 to fewer than 300 as white settlement spread.

"Introduced diseases, shootings and kidnappings disrupted an
indigenous culture that had existed for thousands
        of years," Welford said.

Today's handover would allow the Injinoo community to manage the
land for all Australians, he said.

The four tribes making up the Injinoo people had formed a single
trust to oversee the management.

The land in question includes Crab Island, Albany Island and the
historic settlement of Somerset. It reaches south
to the Skardon River and is bounded on the east by the Jardine River
National Park.
