This last is an excellent point. He made such a big (and
sickening) deal about compromising on "mateship", and
suggesting that indigenous leaders should make a similar
"compromise" on "custodianship". Rod H. is right that a perceived
concession now robs him of ammunition later. Can't hurt.
Incidentally, bits of Beazley's excellent speech (pity words aren't
actions -- or, no, let's not go there again!) are in today's Age. No
doubt Trudy will be supplying the excerpt to us.
