The Australian Institute of Criminology presents Best Practice Interventions in Corrections for Indigenous People 13-15 October 1999 HINDLEY PARKROYAL, ADELAIDE The aims of the conference will be to examine and compare some of the best practice interventions being used within the Australian correctional system for Indigenous people. The conference will provide a forum for Correctional Administrators, custodial staff, Indigenous groups, health professionals, researchers and many others to participate. The AIC is also delighted to be able to draw on the knowledge and experiences from a number of international speakers and participants. A significant component of the conference will introduce expert speakers to discuss specific programs operating within their jurisdictions that are viewed to be making positive contributions to reducing the significant over-representation and custodial death problems, together with progress in reforming areas of the criminal justice system dealing with Indigenous offenders and addressing the underlying issues such as disadvantage and inequality that have contributed to their excessive incarceration rates. The outcomes from this conference should provide invaluable to policy makers, correctional administrators and all practitioners working in the Aboriginal criminal justice field. Come along and participate in this very exciting conference and help identify programs that can really make a difference in addressing the level of Indigenous overrepresentation in our criminal justice system and meet the needs of our Indigenous inmates.
