"Court recognises native title rights
The Federal Court has recognised the native title rights of the
Arrendte people in Alice Springs.
The court has handed down a decision recognising that partial or
total native title exists in 113 of the 166 parcels of land claimed.
Justice Howard Olney said while the claimants had proved native
title, the court's decision did not give them exclusive possession
and occupation rights.
Lawyers for the native title holders says the decision recognises a
"significant" number of rights over "significant" areas of land.
