media release DEATHS IN CUSTODY WATCH COMMITTEE (WA) Inc. Patron: Elder Dr Jack Davis, AO, MBE. An Invitation to Media & all concerned people… Deaths In Custody Remembrance: - John Pat Day 1999 When: 11.00am, Tuesday 28 September 1999 Where: Deaths In Custody Memorial Old Chaplain's House, Old Fremantle Prison Key Address: Commissioner Colin Dillon Commissioner Dillon is the ATSIC Commissioner for Deaths In Custody. He is a retired Queensland Inspector of Police. The death of 16 yr old John Pat, who died of closed head injuries, in a police cell in Roebourne (WA) on the night of 28th September 1983, was instrumental in bringing about a groundswell of demand for action to address Aboriginal deaths in custody. The Royal Commission Into Aboriginal Deaths In Custody established that John Pat had been assaulted by police in the police yard following his arrest. He was then placed in an unconscious or semi-comatose state in a cell and left there until he was found dead during a cell check. Each year on the anniversary of his death, we remember all those who have suffered and died in custody and call on government(s) to implement the 339 recommendations of the Royal Commission. John Pat Day, in this the year of the republic referendum, calls us remember the devastating impact of the colonising processes on First Australians, the people that have gifted this land to our grandchildren. John Pat - Lest we forget, NOT best we forget… Media contact: Kath Mallott, 08 9277-1533 (w) 04-1993-0375(m) Deaths In Custody Watch Committee (WA) Inc) 119 Mathieson Road, REDCLIFFE, Western Australia, 6104 "The beginning of the cause of deaths in custody does not occur within the confines of police and prison cells or in the minds of the victims. Initially it starts in the minds of those who allow it to happen."
