Forwarded from Christine Howes: Aboriginal leaders meet with Queen Five of Australia's most senior Aboriginal leaders have held a private meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in London. They are the first Aboriginal delegation to be officially received in London by a British monarch since 1793, when Bennelong and another Aboriginal man met King George III. Delegation leader Pat Dodson said the aim of the meeting was to talk about Britain's colonisation of Australia, its impact on Aboriginal people and the need for reconciliation, but he said the delegation had not asked the Queen for an apology. Mr Dodson described the tone of the 45-minute encounter as cordial. "Her Majesty's interest in Australia is very strong, I think from our point of view it was a quite significant difference to the way we're sometimes treated in our own country in meetings with our Prime Minister," he said. Mr Dodson was accompanied by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission chair Gatjil Djerrkura, his predecessor Lowitja O'Donoghue, Kimberley Land Council director Peter Yu and leading academic Professor Marcia Langton. --- ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
