ABC NEWS Fri, 15 Oct 1999 15:47 AEST First credit union for indigenous Australians launched New South Wales' first credit union for indigenous Australians has been launched in Sydney. Called First Nations, it will operate as a division of Advantage Credit Union, with its first investment of $5 million coming from the NSW Aboriginal Lands Council. Singer Jimmy Little, who helped launch the credit union, says existing credit unions and banks do not cater to indigenous people. "We just want to make an honest open living and contribute to the growth and welfare of the nation," he said. "And to do that you have to have a financial beginning, a basis to work from. And financial institutions of the past and still today are reluctant to say 'yes' to my nation of people." © 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
