Dear folks, The weekend at Raukkan was a fantastic time. There was a really excellent atmosphere. It was clearly a profoundly significant cultural moment for the Ngarrindjeri nation, and they were generous enough to include anyone else who wanted to be part of it. .... But meanwhile back at the bridge - the Hindmarsh Island/ Kumarangk dispute is hotting up. As mentioned in Dave's recent post, Matt Rigney, [and Tom Trevorrow, Sandra Saunders and other Ngarrindjeri people concerned about their cultural heritage] have called for public support: The Ngarrindjeri People would like your Solidarity and Peaceful support on Wednesday the 27th of October, 9am at Amelia Park (next to the ferry) Goolwa. Bring your banners and placards with your own messages and ideas. The following media segments give some of the picture. ______________________________________________________________ ABC Radio News Tuesday night 26/10/99: Presenter: The Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people will have to wait to find out if they have won an injunction to stop the building of the Hindmarsh Island bridge, south of Adelaide. Justice Margaret Nyland of the South Australian Supreme Court has reserved her decision until late tomorrow morning. The Ngarrindjeri are making the application on a number of grounds, including a claim that building the bridge constitutes an act of genocide on their people. The court heard the Ngarrindjeri would agree to an alternative bridge being built at Wellington, east of Hindmarsh Island, and a second ferry being operated at Goolwa, where the bridge is planned. Len Lindon, lawyer for the Ngarrindjeri, asked the court to order a stay of the construction until the stakeholders negotiate with them. Len Lindon: "On a level playing field all people need to do is negotiate, sit down and talk with each other, and they can work it out. I mean, the Ngarrindjeri are quite happy to sit down and say 'put the bridge at Wellington we think there's a need for a bridge, that's fine, do it there. But not at Hindmarsh Island, just have some respect for our culture'" __________________End of segment E&OE Channel Seven News Adelaide 6pm Tuesday October 26: Presenter: With work at Goolwa due to start tomorrow, Ngarrindjeri Aborigines are claiming they are victims of genocide. Ngarrindjeri people claim they'll be the victims of cultural genocide if the Hindmarsh Island bridge is built at Goolwa. They've told the Supreme Court that a state of war exists between them and the State of South Australia. That's because the Ngarrindjeri say they've never given permission for white settlers to occupy their traditional lands. Len Lindon: "What we're saying is there's secret genocide business going on here. It's a dirty little secret in Australia, it's like domestic violence - no-one talks about it" Reporter: Defence lawyers for the developers and bridge builders told Justice Nyland the bridge was not being built with the intention of killing Aborigines. The Court was told any further delay to the construction of the bridge would be costly and futile. After ten years of delays and legal argument construction work on the bridge is due to start tomorrow morning. If that happens, that will be the signal for another round of protests and possible confrontations with the police and the bridge builders. Darrell Sumner: "Desecration of our sites and our culture is is going to kill us. Reporter: Built Environs has agreed not to start site works until after Justice Nyland reules tomorrow on the Ngarrindjeri's request for an injunction.
