Forwarded from Christine Howes: from Jenny Tannoch-Bland Many of you will be saddened to learn that Mervyn Riley, a lynch-pin of the Brisbane Murri community, has died. Mervyn was a regular visitor to the ANTaR office, quietly educating us over a cup of tea, supporting and advising on all our endeavours. We especially valued his seamless chairing and MCing of ANTaR dinners and had booked him for next yearís calendar. In 1997 Mervyn supported GUPSAís KIALA RECONCILIATION LECTURES whole-heartedly, and spoke eloquently from the floor at every Kiala forum. Many who never met him will have read his moving story in the ANTaR newsletter last year about the hope he felt on looking out over the SEA OF HANDS in the Botanical Gardens in Brisbane. Mervyn will be sorely missed not only by his family and the Murri community, but by all those he touched through his public activism, his quiet conversation, his humour, and his generosity of spirit. He was always prepared to give of his time and care to assist what he called "our white supporters" and went out of his way to make us feel valued and an integral part of the struggle for a better society. There will be a memorial service for Mervyn in Musgrave Park, South Brisbane on Tuesday at 10.30am, for those who wish to pay their respects. The funeral will be in Cherbourg on Thursday at 11.30am. Mervyn received no remuneration for all this work. Please send donations to assist with funeral expenses to the Cherbourg Community Council, Cherbourg, Qld, 4605. Donations can also be made at the ANTaR office, or at the Memorial Service on Tuesday, to Aunty Jean Phillips. ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
