ABC News Thu, 11 Nov 1999 7:18 AEDT Youth Law group calls for axing of mandatory sentencing The National Children's and Youth Law Centre has called for the repeal of mandatory sentencing laws for young offenders in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The Sydney-based group says the laws have been condemned in a report by the International Save the Children Alliance, and other international human rights bodies have also voiced concerns. The group's director Louis Schetzer says pressure is also building within Australia for the laws to be abolished. "There's a Senate committee that's inquiring into the mandatory sentencing regimes in both the Northern Territory and Western Australia ... due to report to Parliament at the first sitting days next year," he said. "One would hope that then the Federal Government will then realise the importance of this issue as a national issue of human rights concern." © 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
