Young Libs reject calls for
Aboriginal monument

The Young Liberals' national conference has
rejected a motion calling for a national monument
recognising the destruction of Aboriginal
communities in the wake of colonisation.

New South Wales delegates put forward the
motion, claiming it would be a symbol recognising
past injustices against Australia's indigenous
communities.

There was, however, opposition from the majority
of delegates who claimed reconciliation was more
a state of mind, with a monument not an
acceptable alternative.

The conference has also passed a motion
rejecting the Federal Government's draft
document for reconciliation as "extreme" and has
called on Aboriginal communities to come up with
a strategy which assists reconciliation without
further dividing the community.

The conference has also opposed any claims for
an indigenous right to self-government.
