They don't have a clue, do they? Just a lot of gall. Trudy ABC News Fri, 7 Jan 2000 15:20 AEDT Young Libs reject calls for Aboriginal monument The Young Liberals' national conference has rejected a motion calling for a national monument recognising the destruction of Aboriginal communities in the wake of colonisation. New South Wales delegates put forward the motion, claiming it would be a symbol recognising past injustices against Australia's indigenous communities. There was, however, opposition from the majority of delegates who claimed reconciliation was more a state of mind, with a monument not an acceptable alternative. The conference has also passed a motion rejecting the Federal Government's draft document for reconciliation as "extreme" and has called on Aboriginal communities to come up with a strategy which assists reconciliation without further dividing the community. The conference has also opposed any claims for an indigenous right to self-government. 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
