Is this not in breach of international conventions on justice? --- Trudy ================================================ ABC News Thur, 3 Feb 2000 20:59 CDT LOCAL NEWS : Northern Territory Legal aid service disappointed by lack of funding for interpreter The North Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service says it is disappointed the Federal Government will not provide funds to set up an Aboriginal interpreter service. During his visit to Darwin, the Federal Multicultural Affairs Minister, Philip Ruddock, said it was unlikely funding for an interpreter service could come from his portfolio. The legal service's Helena Blundell says an interpreter service is crucial for more than 27 per cent of the Territory's population, which is Aboriginal. "There appears to be a refusal by both the territory and federal government to acknowledge that the same need exists for Aboriginal people," she said.
