This inquiry is due to report to Federal Parliament in mid April. We have
heard on the grapevine that so far only two submissions have been received.
It is not too late to put in a submission, if the committee is notified in
advance.

For a critique of the NTAA, see HREOC's Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Social Justice Commissioner Report on Native Title 1998, available
at: <www.hreoc.gov.au>.

The Senate has referred the following matters to the Parliamentary Joint
Committee on Native Title and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land
Fund for inquiry and report:

 Whether the UN CERD committee's finding that the NTAA is inconsistent
with Australia's international legal obligations is sustainable on the
weight of informed opinion;

 What amendments are required to the Act to ensure that Australia's
international obligations are complied with, and what consultation
processes must be followed in effecting those amendments;

 Whether dialogue with the CERD Committee on the Act would assist in
establishing a better-informed basis for amendments to the Act.

Submissions are invited, and the Parliamentary Joint Committee is due to
report by 13 April. For more information, ph (02) 6277 3598. Fax (02) 6277
