Anti-racism demo at Libs convention Source: AAP | Published: Friday April 14, 9:11 AM Anti-racism protesters are planning to demonstrate outside the Liberal Party's federal convention starting in Melbourne today. Organiser Corey Oakley said unions, student and community groups would protest about noon, attacking the federal government's recent stand on Aboriginal issues. "It's quite clear they're running a racist agenda to distract us from the GST," Oakley said. Protesters are unhappy with a recent deal with Prime Minister John Howard to reduce the impact on juveniles of Northern Territory mandatory sentencing laws. "The only solution is to completely get rid of mandatory sentencing," Oakley said. Howard is hoping the convention will have a strong focus on the government's social policies, and set the tone yesterday when he reminded business to play its part in supporting the needy. He wants the convention to focus on his mutual obligation and social coalition policies, rather than internal wrangles over mandatory sentencing in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
