ABC News Mon, 17 Apr 2000 14:21 AEST Indigenous babies more likely to die Indigenous babies are more than three times more likely to die in their first year of life than non-indigenous infants. The finding comes from the latest study of indigenous deaths by the Bureau of Statistics. Infant deaths account for about 8 per cent of all deaths of indigenous people. By contrast, only about 1 per cent of all Australian deaths occur in children under one year of age. Most deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies are related to prematurity and low birth weight, congenital abnormalities and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The report found indigenous people have a higher death rate across all age groups. Fifty-three per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and 41 per cent of women die before the age of 50, compared to 13 and 7 per cent for the entire population. 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- _________________________________ Truth is a pathless land. --- Krishnamurti ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
