Indigenous babies more
likely to die

Indigenous babies are more than three times more
likely to die in their first year of life than
non-indigenous infants.

The finding comes from the latest study of
indigenous deaths by the Bureau of Statistics.

Infant deaths account for about 8 per cent of all
deaths of indigenous people.

By contrast, only about 1 per cent of all Australian
deaths occur in children under one year of age.

Most deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander babies are related to prematurity and low
birth weight, congenital abnormalities and Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome.

The report found indigenous people have a higher
death rate across all age groups.

Fifty-three per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander men and 41 per cent of women die before
the age of 50, compared to 13 and 7 per cent for
the entire population.
