ABC News Tue, 18 Apr 2000 10:19 AEST LOCAL NEWS : Mt Isa Surgeons praise indigenous health program An indigenous health program by Mount Isa's Centre for Rural and Remote Health has been lauded by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The College's Bruce Barraclough who visited the Mount Isa centre yesterday, says its pilot outreach service to Mornington Island and Doomadgee is helping build trust and address indigenous health needs in remote communities. He says the project for which the centre recieves no extra funding is a recognition that health care must also be taken to where the patients are. Mr Barraclough says Australia has an excellent health system both public and private. "People can access some of the best health care in the world," he said. "And yet there is a relatively small group within our community that have levels of illness and death rates that are basically third world. "And that's shameful for a country like this and we need to do something to address those problems." 2000 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- _________________________________ Truth is a pathless land. --- Krishnamurti ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
