Jail community learns
about Aboriginal culture
A small Aboriginal community just outside
Goodooga is educating the prison system about
Aboriginal culture by taking people back to
basics.
People who visit the Mercy camp spend a week
in basic wooden huts without electricity while
they are taught about the Stolen Generation,
Aboriginal food and sacred sites.
It has just received funding from the Department
of Corrective Services, providing officers and
inmates with the opportunity to make regular
visits.
Camp coordinator Elizabeth Wright says so far
officers and inmates from Emu Plains, Ivanhoe
and Grafton have benefited from the scheme.
"I think it's a marvellous thing to the officers
because they're learning about Aboriginal
culture and virtually the only time they get to
see Aboriginal people is when they're in the
cells, so it's an eye-opener, and we feel we're
achieving something," she said.
