It is lucky Howard has stopped using John Herron's calculator, otherwise
he would never have been able to say "that great-hearted generation of
Australians who fought here" at Gallipoli.

Roger Cooper,
Schofields.

Many Anglicans will be saddened by the attitude of the Rev Dr John
Woodhouse, Rector of Christ Church, St Ives, who will not attend the
installation of the Most Rev Peter Carnley as Primate of Australia. Dr
Woodhouse has stated that he "would discourage anyone else from going"
(Herald, April 25).

Deeply committed to social justice, especially Aboriginal
reconciliation, Carnley has a reputation for cutting away theological
dead wood. Inevitably, some of his opinions are not acceptable to
certain sections of the Anglican communion. However, disagreements
between Anglicans and among Christians, generally with regard to the
nature of the resurrection, are not new. Nor are the arguments about the
validity of non-Christian religions, including Judaism, Islam and
Buddhism, as alternative paths to God or Supreme Goodness. Anglicans
have reason to rejoice in their broad inclusive church. The words of
Elizabeth I, its benefactress and defender, have never been more
apposite: "There is only one Jesus Christ. The rest is a dispute over
trifles."

Pamela Chippindall,
Point Piper.
