Reconciliation without apology cannot possibly be reconciliation in any
meaningful sense of the word. If the Reconciliation Council does leave an
apology out of the document because it has bowed to Prime Ministerial
pressure then the document, the council and the whole process will be
compromised. I certainly intend to send an email or letter to them
expressing my opinion. While I am often of the view that a gently gently
approach is the best way to proceed, this is not one of those cases. If
John Howard wants to be the odd man out on this, then he has to be visibly
left out there on his own. If he doesn't think that Reconciliation is the
right model, then he has to be forced to state that, not have the whole
issue fudged as being one of gradualism - another step on the way.
