ABC News Thu, 11 May 2000 9:26 AEST Harradine keen to extend mandatory sentencing amendments The Independent Senator, Brian Harradine, says amendments aimed at removing the Northern Territory's right to enact mandatory sentencing laws for juveniles should be extended to include adults. The Australian Democrats have tabled the amendments in the Senate and debate is expected to continue today. Senator Harradine has told Parliament the amendments should be considered properly and should cover those most affected by mandatory sentencing, Aboriginal people in their early 20s. "If the principle is that mandatory sentencing is an unjustified attempt by the executive to interfere with judicial perogatives then that's a principle that should apply, not only to children but also to late teenagers for example." 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
