ABC News Tue, 16 May 2000 7:20 CST LOCAL NEWS : SA Gulf Cities Claims have been made of police harassment There are claims of police harassment against Aboriginal communities in the State's Far North... following protests at the controversial Beverley Uranium Mine. The harassment claims come from the Nepabunna and Iga Warta communities, following a strong police presence in the area since protests began at Beverley a week ago. Police actions last Tuesday are now subject to an internal investigation after 31 protestors were arrested. Adnyamathanha elder, Kelvin Johnson, says police have been questioning residents and driving up driveways in the early hours of the morning with their sirens on. He says the actions are intimidatory and unneccesary, and he's still awaiting a response from the police about the concerns. "They shouldn't be doing that, they shouldn't be allowed to do that." " They're just telling us that they won the fight I suppose. I don't think they like us much joining up with the greenies, but they're just showing they're support, we'll get anyone to support us." The police are yet to respond to a request to comment on the allegations. 2000 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
