Isn't it interesting how readily they would overturn States rights for
almost anything except human rights for Aboriginal Australians! ---

Minchin to override state legislation

The federal government would override any state laws which tried to stop
a national nuclear waste store being built, Industry Minister
Nick Minchin warned today.

The South Australian government today announced that it would introduce
legislation to stop the location of a national intermediate
level waste storage site in the state.

Senator Minchin said a decision was yet to be made on where the
intermediate radioactive waste would be stored.

'Whichever state or territory ultimately proves to be the best site for
that store, I would expect the cooperation of the relevant
government at that time,' Senator Minchin told reporters in Sydney.

However, Senator Minchin said the Federal Government was prepared to
override state laws.

'If necessary we will override that but...we haven't even begun the
search yet, it may not be in South Australia.'

The minister accused the SA Labor party of making a political issue of
the storage site and said the state government had responded
to that pressure.
