ABC News Tue, 23 May 2000 9:04 CST LOCAL NEWS : SA Gulf Cities Protests expected to continue today against Olympic Dam mine Around 100 protestors have camped overnight at Olympic Dam in preparation for demonstrations today against mine operator WMC Resources. The protest had been expected yesterday, but demonstrators only began arriving at Olympic Dam late in the afternoon. The Flinders Ranges Environmental Action Collective says it wants to highlight the company's excessive use of water from the Great Artesian Basin. WMC Resources has boosted security, and it's understood extra police are also at the site. WMC spokesman, Richard Yeeles, says a fence around the mine's desalination plant has been knocked over, but there have been no major disruptions. He's agreed to meet with protest leader Kevin Buzzacott this morning. " I'm happy to do that ...if he's got any issues he wants to discuss with us ...I've had a number of meetings with Kevin in the past and I'll be pleased to have another discussion with him." 2000 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
