The author, Ilsa Kiessling from the World Wide Fund for Nature, says many beaches along the Top End are blanketed with nets, ropes and other debris. Dr Kiessling says the nets kill and maim threatened species including turtles, dugong, dolphins and even whales. She says more research needs to done to properly identify where the nets have come from, before any prosecutions or education programs can begin. "It depends on why these nets are entering the water -- whether or not it's because of being lost; whether or not they're being deliberately dumped," Dr Kiessling said.
