Dear Sue (Bears who Care),
In Australia there exists a town called Port Augusta. We have been so
downtrodden by our own mob and the non-aboriginal people in this town, that
every organisation which exists to help us or our kids, is just another
illusion provided by the government or someone else to show they are trying
to help the aboriginal people. Forgive me for being cynical, but this is
exactly what happens. The majority of the aboriginal people in this town
suffer from the problems you have mentioned. The organisation which catered
for domestic violence( which had 3 aboriginal members on the management
committee)namely, the Northern Country Womens' and Children Support
Services, was put in the hands of an Administrator when the three white
members resigned. The Department for Human Services and Health did not want
Aboriginal people in control of an organisation which had 80-90% aboriginal
control.
I am Chairperson of the Indigenous Womens Support Group in Port Augusta. We
have an interest in whoever or whatever would like to come into our
community to allegedly work with, and support us. We do not accept ATSIC
funding because we do not want the ATSIC clones talking for us and directing
our dreams. If your heart and interest are with us, please feel free to
communicate with me (on behalf of the Group) and we will try to assist.
Most of our organisations are run by men, if that is any indication!
Yours
June Lennon

PORT AUGUSTA. S.A. 5700
