ABC News Fri, 16 Jun 2000 7:48 AEST Protesters continue to picket SA mining area Police have refused to become involved in an ongoing dispute with protesters at their site on a WMC mining lease near Lake Eyre South. Far north region Superintendent Kym Boxall says the police will not take action unless directed to by the courts. WMC issued an eviction notice to the 15 protesters at the Arabunna Going Home camp on Wednesday, telling them they had a day to leave. The group has refused to move, saying they have a right to protest against the company's uranium mining and use of millions of litres of water from the Great Artesian Basin. Camp leader and Arabunna elder Kevin Buzzacott says the actions have only made them more determined to complete their 2,600 km walk from Lake Eyre to the Sydney Olympics, to inform the world of their concerns. "We're using the forum the venue while the world's watching us so we can get our message across and they know we're coming," he said. "They're already trying to put up obstacles, but it's too big, the spirit's with us. "We're moving the right way, we're doing the right thing, so the whole country's following us. It's got to follow us." © 2000 Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
