Gday all,
Just a friendly note to let you know what's on ABC TV during NAIDOC
week:
Monday to Thursday @ 11am, Storytellers of the Pacific. This four part
series examines issues relating to contemporary indigenous people in the
Pacific region. It specifically focuses on culture, spirituality,
history
and their experiences and survival after colonisation. Each program
contains five segments from Australia, NZ, Canada, Samoa and the USA.
Tuesday, 8.00pm Bush Mechanics gives a comical look at the way "bush"
Aboriginal people have adopted the car and created a unique craft of
Bush
Mechanics. It is a larger than life tale of outback indigenous
ingenuity,
of desert men and the unusual ways their cars a kept on track.
Tuesday, 11.15pm. An evocative portrayal of Aboriginal life in the
early
eighties, Wrong Side of the Road follows the Aboriginal bands "Us Mob"
and
"No Fixed Address" on the road. After a band member is arrested and
subsequently escapes from a police vehicle, the film continues with
run-ins
between the musicians and "the establishment".
Wednesday, 11.15pm Ray's Story. Having lived in "the white man's
world",
Ray is an educated, angry young man who has returned to Redfern to
dedicate
himself to defending his people against racism and discrimination.
Screening Thursday, 11.15pm is Babakiueria. An examination of
black-white
relations in Australia, the film is set in the fictitious land of
Babakiueria, where white people are the minority and must obey black
laws.
A critical and popular success, this reverse angle probe into racial
inequality in Australia has developed a considerable cult following. It
approaches it's subject with humour but it is no less effective for that
-
perhaps more so. The white Australian lifestyle is seen through
patronising
Aboriginal eyes within the pseudo-documentary format. Written by
Geoffrey
Atherden of "Mother and Son" fame. Won a United Nations Media Peace
Prize.
Friday 11am, The Kimberley : Land of the Wandjina. The images are
painted
on the rocks, but their spirits are in the monsoon clouds that blow in
from
the North. They are the Wandjina, guardians of one of the last great
wilderness areas on Earth - the Kimberley region of north west
Australia.
Everything in the Kimberley has adapted to live with the cycles of
returning
water.
Enjoy!
