"These concerns and complaints involved pretty much all police agencies in the province -- not every single one but pretty much," said Cal Johnston, who is also Regina's police chief. "In our view it is not constructive to leave these concerns unanswered." The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says 16 allegations of police abandoning natives outside towns and cities across the province were made on its toll-free line as of June. A total of 316 complaints were received. The federation set up the hotline shortly after Darrell Night alleged Saskatoon police drove him to a remote area outside of the city and told him to find his own way back on Jan. 28. Two Saskatoon police officers have been charged with assault and unlawful confinement. A special RCMP task force is looking into the suspicious deaths of six other aboriginal men, including Rodney Naistus, 25, and Lawrence Wegner, 30, whose frozen bodies were found on Jan. 29 and Feb. 3 in the same area where Night alleges he was left. No charges have been laid in any of the deaths. Because of the 16 new allegations, police departments will assign officers to work with a federation investigator looking into police misconduct against aboriginal people, said Johnston. Lawrence Joseph, federation vice-president, welcomed the move but repeated calls for a public inquiry.
