Question: What if the crafts themselves, in the cultural centre,
contained elements of protest? Painted on them? By indigenous people?
Weaved into them? A part of them?
Surely brave, confronting work by people like Julie Dowling & Gordon
Bennett should also be seen in that cultural centre...not just the
work that SOCOG thinks makes them look supportive of indigenous art
and craft?
Will works by young urban-based artists and craftspeople be included?
Hope so!
We should take this chance to show work that is critical of what has
happened over the last 200 years...as well as the rest...
Or are we trying to keep the visitors away from the sight of art that
is moving; that engages people with tough issues, and that shows that
protest can take a myriad of forms?
We should perhaps start asking the people who make these decisions,
just why it is that certain art and craft is shown in these centres
while others are generally not...
