John Howard has cited the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child when voicing his opposition to in-vitro treatment for single and lesbian women. The law centre's director, Lou Schetzer, says Mr Howard is using the convention to suit himself, as children's rights are the basis of the fight against mandatory sentencing. "[It is] clear there is a double standard that is being exercised here," he said. "The Government has indicated a concern for children to have access to both loving parents, for both fathers and mothers, and on that basis they are proposing to amend the Sex Discrimination Act.
