Sir,
Both our Government and Opposition, and their cohort have voiced concerns
about the recent events in Fiji. They are hypocrites of some magnitude.
As I see it, Mr Speight called for a racist solution to what he perceives
as
a significant social and constitutional problem. It was not unexpected,
and since the imprisonment of the "rebels" we have heard a torrent of
words
from both sides of Australian politics, including the trades unions about
just what Fiji must do to become "like us" non-racist in our constitution.
Yet we have exactly the racist constitution that the Fiji "rebels" desire!
"25. For the purposes of the last section, if by the law of any State all
persons of any race are disqualified from voting at elections for the
more numerous House of the Parliament of the State, then, in reckoning the
number of the people of the State or of the Commonwealth, persons of the
race resident in that State shall not be counted. "
and
"51. The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make
laws for the peace, order, and good government of the Commonwealth with
respect to (xxvi.) The people of any race in any State, for whom it is
deemed necessary to make special laws. "
Not just Mr Speight, but Mr Schicklegruber and Dr Goebells would also find
useful this legal affirmation of an idea, and idea that cannot be supported
by science.
Oh dear, white Australia and eugenics are alive and well, and so is the
hypocrisy and humbug of our politicians.
As a person awaiting prosecution for refusal to vote on our constitution
last year, because I would neither affirm, nor re-ify by refusal, this
racist document, I can only deplore all racist activity, and that includes
our political masters and their refusal to amend our constitution in the
manner that they insist of the sovereign state Fiji.
One does have to wonder though, if the Fiji peoples will next call on CSR
and Australia to repatriate the descendants of our colonial slave labour
force from their islands, and to where?
