Former Aboriginal affairs
minister defends removals

A former federal Aboriginal affairs minister has
defended past practices of removing Aboriginal
children from their families.

Peter Howson, who was the minister in the Liberal
government in the early 1970s, has appeared
before the Senate inquiry into the Stolen
Generations.

Mr Howson says he supports the past policies,
based on conversations with patrol officers in his
department when he was minister.

"After questioning them intently on this, I have not
found any evidence that supports a finding that
there was any policy of forced removal of
Aboriginal children," he said.

"In the whole of my time, which goes back some
years, I still stand by that judgement."
