The Boston Globe An Australian call for justice For the Olympics, Aborigines camp out to remind the world of a long, enduring legacy of oppression by white colonialists By Mitchell Zuckoff, Globe Staff, 8/20/2000 SYDNEY - Gathered in a city park, re-creating a fire ceremony they called the oldest ritual known to humans, a group of Aboriginal activists gave voice last week to their smoldering grievances. ''They have waged an undeclared war against our people,'' said Isabell Coe, a veteran Aboriginal leader. ''We want to end this war. This is about peace and justice. This is what we want, and this is what our fire represents.'' She then led 30 people, an equal number of Aborigines and white supporters, in placing green eucalyptus branches on the fire. Fragrant plumes of smoke framed her as she hugged each participant. Coe is the woman behind an Aboriginal ''tent embassy,'' which has occupied Victoria Park near central town Sydney since July. The encampment is a ragtag reminder of the plight of Australia's first people, a tiny, downtrodden minority on a continent they once had to themselves. continues at: http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/233/nation/An_Australian_call_for_justice+.shtml -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
